The Parish of Maitland - A Living Legacy

Parish clergy and community

The Parish of Maitland was originally established in 1858 as the Parish of Saint John the Baptist, serving the Anglican faithful in this beautiful corner of Nova Scotia. In 1866, it was renamed Maitland Parish, with Holy Trinity Church in Maitland serving as the primary parish church.

Today, the parish encompasses three cherished churches, each with its own distinct character while sharing a common faith and mission:

✟ Holy Trinity, Maitland

The parish church and heart of our shared Anglican heritage. This beautiful Gothic Revival structure stands as a testament to the faith of our founding generations.

✟ St. Paul, Northfield

A beloved community church serving the faithful in Northfield and surrounding areas with warmth and dedication.

✟ St. Peter's, Upper Kennetcook

Our church home! St. Peter's has been a spiritual anchor for Upper Kennetcook, providing a place of worship, fellowship, and service for over a century and a half.

A Rich Anglican Tradition

St. Peter's, along with our sister churches, represents the enduring presence of the Anglican Church of Canada in Nova Scotia. The Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island is the oldest of the seven dioceses forming the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada, with roots tracing back to 1710 and the first Anglican services in Nova Scotia.

Our churches were built in the Gothic Revival style, reflecting the architectural ideals of the Victorian era when many Anglican churches across Canada were constructed. These buildings were designed not just as places of worship, but as enduring symbols of faith and community commitment.

Christ Church - A Historic Landmark

Christ Church Anglican Church of Canada, located at 455 Northfield Road in Maitland, completed in 1866, is one of the oldest churches in the Maitland area. Celebrated for its Gothic Revival architecture with Greek Revival decorative elements, it stands as a recognized historic landmark in our region.

Serving Through the Generations

For over 165 years, the Parish of Maitland has been a constant presence in our communities. Through times of prosperity and challenge, war and peace, growth and change, our churches have remained open, offering:

Remembering and Honoring

Remembrance Day ceremony

Each year our parish gathers for Remembrance Day services, honoring those from our communities who served and sacrificed in defense of freedom. These solemn ceremonies connect us to our history and remind us of the cost of peace.

The memorial cenotaph stands as a permanent reminder of the debt we owe to those who answered the call of duty, and our services ensure their memory and sacrifice are never forgotten.

A Living Heritage

Our heritage is not simply about preserving the past—it's about carrying forward a living tradition of faith, worship, and service. Each generation adds its own chapter to the story while remaining rooted in the timeless truths of the Gospel and the beauty of Anglican worship.

We invite you to become part of this continuing story. Whether you have deep roots in this community or are newly arrived in Upper Kennetcook, St. Peter's welcomes you to share in our heritage and help shape our future.
